DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC
Mowing Proper mowing enhances the appearance of a lawn and increases the turfgrass vigor. Depending on type of grass:--it should be cut between 1-3"--Mowed in Spring 1-2 times per week and in Summer and Fall approximately once a week.To obtain a natural source of nitrogen, the grass clippings should be left in the grass. This is possible with frequent mowing. (SEE MULCHING/CLIPPINGS)
Fertilization If a thick, green and beautiful weed-free lawn is your goal, then you are going to need to apply some type of fertilizer. A healthy and actively-growing lawn uses a great deal of energy. Most soils are not able to provide all the nurtrients that turfgrass needs. Fertilization promotes new leaf and root growth--aides recovery from foot traffic and pest damage--reduces weeds--replaces the lost nutrients not obtained by retained grass clippings.Fertilization is done lightly in early spring and heavily in the fall.(SEE MULCHING/CLIPPINGS))
Aeration Lawn aeration involves the removal of small soil plugs or cores out of the lawn.Aeration benefits the lawn by: increasing the activity of soil micro-organisms--increasing water, nutrient and oxygen movement into the soil--improving rooting--enhancing infiltration of rainfall or irrigation--helps prevent fertilizer and pesticide run-off from overly compacted areas. Optimal time of year for aeration is in the fall. PLEASE NOTE: It is very important if you have a sprinkler system to make sure you mark the sprinkler heads to prevent damage when the aerator is used. Marking the heads with flags is one methods some homeowners use.
Pruning Pruning is a procedure to maintain a healthy tree or shrub. This begins when the tree/scrub is young to correct any structural flaws or the direct it's growth properly. Yearly pruning helps the tree to become established and to develop it's structure to achieve the look you want. Older trees/scrubs are usually not pruned on a regular basis unless they present a hazard to pedestrian or automobile traffic; or pose a potential for damaging a structure such as a home or neighboring structures during storms. In short pruning is used to promote plant/tree health, improve it's appearance or protect people and property.
Mulching/Clippings Mulching is the application of ground covers like pine bark to beds, around trees and areas where moisture retention is desired. Returning the grass clipping is another form of fertilization due to the high nitrogen potential that is returned to the grass when the clippings are allowed to filter down into the turf during mowing. Approximately 20% is returned to the soil which feeds the root system of the turf. Leaving the clippings is called "grasscycling". It saves time--landfill spaces and nurtures the soil.
Overseeding While fertilizing is an important requirement for that lush lawn, a lawn gets tired just like people when they age. The production of plush sod slows and the sod thins. This invites weeds and promotes disease. It then needs revitalization. One method of revitalizing is called "overseeding". The best time for this process is in September. Once the seeding has been done the lawn needs to be watered faithfully twice a day for two weeks. Otherwise, the new seedling will dry and either blow away or not germinate at all. Each day that is missed causes up to 30% lost germination. With good hydrations the end result is a thick dense sod that is hardy and healthy.
Clean-up yard/beds Most responsible lawn care companies provide clean-up after they have serviced your property. The goal is to maintain an aesthetic appearance as if no one had been there. When needed spring and fall clean-up of various flower/shrub beds can be provided to either remove the debri from the winter or prepare the beds for the onslaught of winter.
Trimming As with clean-up, this service should be included in your basic lawn care package. The edges around your sidewalks and beds should be trimmed to maintain a neat edging to these areas.
Insect control In nature we need SOME insects to help maintain plant health. One example would be the honey bee. However, in a lawn some insects can be harmful to the plush appearance. Grubs are an example of such a insect. Prompt application of insect repellant or eliminating formula is essential to minimize the damage these insects can cause.
Pest control Occasionally homeowners are host to a pesky creature that burrows unseen under your lawn. These are known as moles. Tiny creatures that love to undermine your lawn from bellow. You will notice lines (tunnels) running in various directions over your lawn. while traps have been known to help, the most effective method requires the services of an authorized "pest control" company.
Evaluation of Lawn Condition In order to estimate the scope of services you will need, you should have an onsite lawn evaluation by your lawn care professional. Factors such as size; type of grass; overall present condition; presence of unwanted grasses, weeds, insects or pests; soil condition; presence of a sprinkler system; and type of service the homeowner desires are evaluated. (While this list covers many items it is not all inclusive of the services that can be offered or evaluated.
